Whether you are a new contact lens wearer or have been wearing contact lenses for years, we could all use a little refresher on the dos and don’ts of contact lens wear from time to time.
Your contact lenses must be fitted by a qualified professional. You should also be seen for an aftercare every year to monitor the health of your eye and to ensure you are using the optimal prescription.
Be sure to thoroughly wash and dry your hands before handling your contact lenses. Do not skip this basic step!
Do not shower or swim in your contact lenses. There are impurities in tap water which can bind onto your lens, not a good thing to have sat on your eye all day.
You should never sleep in contact lenses. Unless you are wearing a type that is specifically designed for this purpose. Most contact lenses do not allow enough oxygen to reach your eye and it is not safe to wear overnight or while napping. If you have ever accidentally fallen asleep in your lenses you will also know it is not comfortable trying to take them out!
Never reuse a daily disposable contact lens. These lenses are designed to be for one use only.
Never share a contact lens with another person! This one should really go without saying.
Insert your contact lenses before you apply any eye makeup. Also take the lenses out before removing any eye makeup.
If your eyes start to not look right, feel right, or if your vision is not right, just take your lenses out! Do not persevere with lenses that could be damaging your eyes. Also be sure to ring up your opticians to have these changes looked at.
